Recent studies, however, suggest that the reality of open-plan offices often falls short of these ideals. Instead of increasing collaboration, the lack of privacy often leads employees to withdraw, using headphones to create artificial barriers. ( 2 ), the constant noise and visual distractions can severely hamper concentration and productivity.

While some thrive in the buzzing energy of an open space, many find it stressful and draining. ( 3 ), a growing number of companies are moving towards hybrid designs that offer a mix of open areas for teamwork and quiet, private spaces for focused individual work.
