The Construction of the Panama Canal

The idea of creating a water passage across the Isthmus of Panama to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans existed for centuries. In the 1880s, a French company led the first major attempt to build a canal. However, the project was a catastrophic failure. Workers were decimated by tropical diseases, particularly yellow fever and malaria, and the company eventually went bankrupt. In 1904, the United States took over the canal's construction. A crucial turning point was the realization that mosquitoes were the carriers of the deadly diseases that had stopped the French. The Chief Medical Officer, Dr. William Gorgas, implemented extensive mosquito eradication programs, such as draining swamps and fumigating buildings. ( 2 ), the disease rate plummeted, making it safe for engineers and laborers to work.

This medical triumph allowed the massive engineering feat to proceed using a complex system of locks rather than a sea-level canal. Opened in 1914, the Panama Canal revolutionized international trade.
