The Comparison Trap
Social media platforms were designed to connect people, but psychologists are increasingly concerned about their impact on mental health. A major issue is the tendency for users to compare their own lives with the curated, idealized versions of lives presented by others online. People rarely post about their failures or mundane moments; instead, they showcase their highlights—vacations, achievements, and happy relationships. ( 1 ), viewing this constant stream of apparent perfection can lead individuals to feel inadequate and dissatisfied with their own lives.
This phenomenon is sometimes called "Facebook depression." Studies have shown a correlation between heavy social media use and increased feelings of anxiety, loneliness, and depression, particularly among teenagers and young adults. ( 2 ), the pressure to maintain a certain online image can be exhausting and stressful.
Experts advise users to be mindful of their social media consumption. It is important to remember that what we see online is often a performance, not reality. ( 3 ), limiting screen time and focusing on real-world interactions are crucial steps toward maintaining mental well-being in the digital age.
