The microwave oven is a very common kitchen machine today, but it was invented by accident. In 1945, an engineer named Percy Spencer was working with a machine that made microwaves for radar. One day, while standing near the machine, he noticed that a chocolate candy bar in his pocket had melted completely. He suddenly realized that the invisible microwaves ( 1 ) a lot of heat.

To test his new idea, he put some popcorn kernels near the machine. Just as he expected, they quickly popped. Spencer soon created the first microwave oven to cook food. However, these early microwave ovens were very large and cost a lot of money. ( 2 ), only big restaurants and hotels bought them.

It took many years for the technology to improve. Over time, the machines became much smaller, safer, and cheaper. Eventually, regular families could buy them for their homes. This new technology completely ( 3 ) the way people cook, allowing them to prepare warm meals in just a few minutes.
