The Key to the Past
For centuries, the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt were a mystery to scholars. The meaning of these symbols had been lost since the end of the Roman period. However, the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 changed everything. This black slab of rock contained a decree written in three scripts: ancient Greek, Demotic, and hieroglyphs. Because scholars could read ancient Greek, they realized the stone was a key. ( 1 ), by comparing the Greek text with the other two, they hoped to decipher the hieroglyphs.
The process of decipherment was arduous and took decades. The breakthrough finally came from Jean-François Champollion, a brilliant French linguist. He identified that the hieroglyphs were not just symbolic but also phonetic, representing sounds. ( 2 ), he discovered that the cartouches—oval shapes enclosing groups of symbols—contained the names of royalty, such as Ptolemy.
Champollion's work opened a window into ancient Egyptian history. Suddenly, the inscriptions on tombs, temples, and obelisks could speak to the modern world. ( 3 ), the Rosetta Stone became one of the most important archaeological artifacts ever found, serving as the bridge between the ancient and modern eras.
