A Global Drink

Tea is the second most consumed drink in the world, after water. Its origins can be traced back to ancient China, where it was initially used as a medicine. According to legend, Emperor Shen Nung discovered tea by accident when leaves from a wild tree blew into his pot of boiling water. ( 1 ), tea drinking became a social custom and spread to other Asian countries like Japan.

In the 17th century, tea was introduced to Europe by Dutch merchants. It quickly became popular among the wealthy classes. ( 2 ), because of high taxes, it was too expensive for ordinary people. It wasn't until the 19th century that tea became affordable for everyone.

Today, tea is grown in many parts of the world, including India and Kenya. Different cultures have developed unique ways of preparing it. In Britain, people often add milk and sugar. ( 3 ), in Morocco, tea is served with fresh mint. This variety shows how tea has adapted to local tastes everywhere.
