In the past, zoos were mainly created to entertain visitors who wanted to see exotic animals from around the world. ( 1 ), the primary role of modern zoos has changed significantly. Today, they focus heavily on public education and wildlife conservation.

Many animal species are losing their natural habitats due to human activities such as farming and city expansion. To help solve this growing problem, modern zoos work hard to ( 2 ) these endangered animals from extinction. They hire experts to study the animals' behavior, health, and diet.

( 3 ), many zoos participate in international breeding programs. By carefully breeding rare animals like pandas, rhinos, and certain kinds of tigers, zoos hope to increase their populations. Eventually, the ultimate goal of these programs is to return some of the healthy animals back into the wild to restore natural ecosystems.
