A Cool Treat's History

Ice cream is one of the most popular desserts in the world, but its history is surprisingly long. The origins of frozen desserts can be traced back to ancient China around 200 B.C. People there created a dish made of milk and rice that was packed in snow to keep it cold. Later, Roman emperors were known to send runners up into the mountains to bring back fresh snow, which was then flavored with fruits and honey.

However, the creamy ice cream we know today did not appear until much later. In the 13th century, the explorer Marco Polo returned to Italy from China. He brought back recipes for frozen milk desserts. These recipes spread across Europe, but for a long time, ice cream was a luxury enjoyed only by kings and queens. It was difficult to make and even harder to keep cold without refrigerators.

It was not until the 19th century that ice cream became available to everyone. New machines made it easier to produce in large amounts, and the invention of better cooling systems meant it could be stored for longer. Today, you can find ice cream in almost every flavor imaginable, from simple vanilla to strange tastes like squid ink.

Q1

How did Roman emperors enjoy frozen desserts?

Q2

What happened after Marco Polo returned to Italy?

Q3

Why was ice cream only for rich people for a long time?
