The Decline of Cursive Writing

In the past, learning to write in cursive was a very important part of elementary school education. Students spent hours practicing how to write beautiful, connected letters smoothly. ( 1 ), in recent years, a large number of schools in the United States and other countries have stopped teaching cursive entirely.

One major reason for this change is the rapid rise of digital technology. Most written communication today is done on computers, tablets, and smartphones using keyboards. ( 2 ), many educators believe it is much more useful to teach students typing and computer skills rather than traditional handwriting.

While some parents support this change, some historians are worried. They argue that if students do not learn cursive, they will ( 3 ) the ability to read important historical documents, such as old letters written by their grandparents or famous figures from the past.
