The Rosetta Stone
Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs fascinated scholars for centuries, but their meaning was lost after the decline of the Egyptian empire. Without a key to decipher the symbols, historians could only guess at the contents of ancient texts. The breakthrough came in 1799 with the discovery of the Rosetta Stone by French soldiers. This dark granodiorite slab contained a single decree inscribed in three different scripts: Ancient Greek, Demotic, and Egyptian hieroglyphs. Because scholars could still read Greek, the stone provided a crucial ( 1 ) for translating the unknown scripts.
The decipherment process was far from simple. Initially, experts assumed that hieroglyphs were purely symbolic, with each picture representing an entire concept. ( 2 ), French scholar Jean-François Champollion demonstrated that the symbols also had phonetic values, meaning they represented sounds. By comparing the names of rulers in the Greek text to the hieroglyphs, Champollion finally cracked the code in 1822. His achievement ( 3 ) a new era of Egyptology, allowing the modern world to read the ancient civilization's recorded history.
