Summer Festivals

In Japan, summer is the season for local festivals, called 'matsuri.' Many towns hold their own unique festivals. People wear traditional clothes called yukata and go to see fireworks. There are many food stalls selling things like yakisoba and takoyaki. It is a very lively and fun atmosphere. ( 1 ), festivals are a good opportunity for neighbors to meet and talk.

Some festivals are very famous and attract many tourists from other prefectures. ( 2 ), the Gion Festival in Kyoto is one of the biggest in Japan. It has a history of over one thousand years. During the festival, large floats are pulled through the streets.

Preparing for a festival takes a lot of work. Local people practice music and dances for weeks before the event. ( 3 ) it is hard work, everyone enjoys participating because it brings the community together.
