Bicycles are a very common way to travel today, but they looked very different in the past. The first bicycle was invented in Germany in 1817. It was made of wood and did not have any pedals. To move forward, the rider had to push against the ground with their feet, like walking or running while sitting on the machine. It was heavy and hard to ride.
In the 1860s, French inventors added pedals to the front wheel. These bicycles became popular, but they were not very safe. To make the bicycle go faster, the front wheel was made very large, sometimes taller than a person! Because the rider sat so high up, it was easy to fall off and get hurt.
Finally, in the 1880s, the "safety bicycle" was invented in England. This bicycle had two wheels of the same size and used a metal chain connected to the back wheel. This design made the bicycle much safer and easier to ride. Soon after, rubber tires filled with air were added, making the ride much smoother. This is the basic design that we still use today.
