When we think of wild animals, we usually imagine them living in deep forests or high mountains. However, many wild animals are now moving into large cities. Animals like raccoons, foxes, and some wild birds have learned how to live among human buildings. They come to cities mostly because it is very easy to find food in garbage cans and behind restaurants.

( 1 ), cities are often warmer than the countryside during the winter months. Buildings and roads hold heat, which makes it easier for animals to survive the cold weather. Because of the food and warmth, city populations of some wild animals are growing quickly.

To protect these animals, some cities are creating special green spaces and bridges over large roads.
