Changing Clothes to Save Energy

In Japan, summer is very hot and humid. For many years, businessmen wore suits and ties even on the hottest days. This meant offices had to use a lot of air conditioning to keep everyone cool. In 2005, the Japanese government started a campaign called "Cool Biz" to solve this problem.

The idea of Cool Biz is simple. Workers are encouraged to wear lighter clothes, like short-sleeved shirts, and to stop wearing ties and jackets. This allows companies to set their air conditioners to 28 degrees Celsius. By keeping the room temperature higher, Japan can save a huge amount of electricity and reduce carbon dioxide.

At first, some people felt strange going to work without a tie. They thought it looked too casual. However, Cool Biz is now very popular. It has changed the summer lifestyle in Japan, and many people feel more comfortable and happy at work during the hot season.
