How Urban Trees Cool Streets
Cities are often warmer than nearby rural areas because dark roofs and roads absorb sunlight and release the stored heat slowly. Trees can reduce this effect in two main ways. First, their leaves block sunlight from reaching surfaces. A shaded wall or sidewalk therefore stores less heat during the day.
Second, trees cool the air through transpiration. Roots take up water, and some of that water eventually leaves through tiny openings in the leaves. Changing liquid water into vapor requires energy, so heat is removed from the surrounding air. This is similar to the cooling effect people feel when sweat evaporates.
However, planting any tree anywhere does not guarantee the same benefit. Young trees provide little shade, and species with small crowns may never cover much ground. Water availability also matters. During a severe drought, some trees close their leaf openings to conserve water, reducing transpiration. Placement is equally important: trees planted on the western side of a building can block strong afternoon sun, while trees far from streets and buildings may have less direct effect on surface temperatures.
For this reason, city planners increasingly evaluate crown size, local water conditions, and location rather than simply counting how many trees are planted.
