The Repair Box

When Hana joined the school broadcasting club, she wanted to create programs, not repair equipment. The storage room contained a wooden box labeled Try First. Inside were screwdrivers, tape, spare cables, and a notebook. The first page read, “Describe the problem before replacing anything.”

One afternoon, the club's oldest microphone stopped working. Hana immediately asked the teacher to order a new one, but he pointed to the box. Reluctantly, she wrote in the notebook: No sound; power light is on. She then switched the microphone cable with one from a working set. The microphone worked, proving that the cable—not the microphone—was faulty. A spare cable from the box solved the problem in minutes.

Over the following months, Hana added notes about loose plugs, dead batteries, and incorrect settings. Other members began reading the notebook before asking for help. By spring, the club had spent less on replacements and lost less rehearsal time.

On her final day as club leader, Hana saw a first-year student reach for the box. “The speakers are broken,” he said. Hana smiled and handed him the notebook. “Perhaps,” she replied, “but describe the problem first.”
