A Sound in the Forest

Our biology class visited a forest to record sounds for a school exhibition. I wanted to capture the song of a bird that our teacher had described, but the forest seemed unusually quiet after the rain. While my classmates walked ahead, I stopped beside a fallen tree and heard a repeated tapping sound.

At first, I thought a woodpecker was hiding behind the tree. I raised my recorder, but the sound stopped. When I lowered it, the tapping began again. After several attempts, I noticed that drops of water were falling from a branch onto an empty metal can caught between two roots. The can made a clear sound each time a drop hit it.

I recorded the pattern and hurried to catch up with the class. At the exhibition, I explained that the sound was not made by an animal. Some visitors were disappointed, but a younger student said the forest had made its own instrument. Her comment changed my view. I had gone looking for a sound that already existed; instead, careful listening helped me discover something that had been created by weather and chance.
