Springfield High School Debate Club Invites You!
Our award-winning Debate Club is hosting its annual public debate. This event is open to all students, faculty, and community members.
Topic: "Should high schools require students to complete 100 hours of mandatory volunteer service for graduation?"
Date: Friday, November 21st
Time: 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM
Location: Auditorium
Come and support our two teams—the Affirmative side (arguing for the requirement) and the Negative side (arguing against it).
A Q&A session with the audience will follow the main debate. We hope to see you there for an afternoon of critical thinking!
School Forum: Went to the debate last week

I went to the debate on Friday. The topic was "mandatory volunteer service."
Honestly, I thought the Negative side (arguing against) had stronger arguments. Their final speaker, Saki (I think she's a 3rd year), was incredibly persuasive. Her point about students having less time for club activities and study was very realistic.
The Affirmative side (arguing for) was also good, but their arguments about "building character" felt a bit weak to me.
The Q&A session was interesting. Several parents asked tough questions. I'm glad I went, even though I'm not in the debate club.
According to the announcement, who is invited to the public debate?
